Description
Prof. Anton Veeblefitzer had left his mark (off-color graffiti in the washroom) while visiting the Mitsubishi Aircraft Manufacturing Association (MAMA) prior to Pearl Harbor.
Inspired by his aw-to-hell-with attitude, the more revolutionary-minded young designers came up with the Super Rufe, in competition against, what they thought was the mediocre A6M2-N , Rufe float-plane design.
The young engineers built their design around the super-powerful Kinzee 1940 radial motor, rated a 3,000hp for take-off.
Ruggedly constructed and armed with 2 x 20mm fuselage mounted cannon and two wing mounted 35mm cannon, and projected to be able to carry 4,000lbs of bombs and torpedoes, the Super Rufe's planned mission was as an anti-ship attack vehicle.
Maximum speed, unloaded, was estimated to be at near 400mph.
Pictured is the prototype which first flew in January 1942, and so impressed the Imperial Nipponese Naval High Command, that they ordered it into full production.
